The city of Anchorage, officially the Municipality of Anchorage, is located in south central Alaska. Anchorage orginated as a tent city that sprang into existance during the construction of the Alaska Railroad, in 1914. Today, Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, with a population of over 290,000. Anchorage is located near the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and the Chugach State Park.

Residents of Anchorage enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, bicycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, gardening, and more. Area sporting events include the start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Great Alaska Shootout basketball tournament, and Fur Rondy.
